<top of page> Franciscan Sisters of Allegany The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany – or “Brown Franciscans” – are a group of dedicated religious women in the Roman Catholic Church in Jamaica. We are FRANCISCANS because we belong the Franciscan Order which is an international group founded by St. Francis of Assisi and because we strive to live the Gospel according to the ideals of St. Francis. We are SISTERS OF ALLEGANY because we trace our group’s beginnings to a little town in New York State called Allegany. We profess the evangelical vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience.
To summarize: We are an American- founder Congregation, rooted in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi. We are shaped by the courage and missionary spirit of our early founders. We are called by God to witness to the Good News of the Gospel by our contemplative attitude of prayer, our simple life-style, our familiar spirit of community, and our dedicated and humble service to the people of God whom we serve. Humility, simplicity, joy, hospitality and light-heartedness characterize us as a group. You will find us rendering humble service in Montego Bay – two schools and clinic – St. Mary – one school – Kingston and St. Andrew – six schools and one Teachers College.
<top of page> College Theme Song (Prayer of St. Francis) St. Francis of Assisi realized that PEACE is a gift of God our Creator. Throughout his life he made every effort to promote reconciliation and harmony among all peoples. Although he himself is not the author, the following Peace Prayer is attributed to his inspiration. There are a variety of arrangements of these words for singing of praying. The following version has been adapted for the College Theme Song.
Make me a channel of your peace Make me a channel of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me bring your love; Where there is injury, your pardon Lord. And where there is doubt true faith in you. Make me a channel of your peace, Where here is despair in life let me bring hope; Where there is darkness – only light, And where there’s sadness ever joy. O Master grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace, It is in pardoning that we are pardon, In giving to all men that we receive, And in dying that we are born to eternal life <top of page>
